The Trail

The Road was long yet they managed to make great headway unhindered. Their first two nights themselves interrupted only by a sense of unease brought on by lucid dreams. They sometimes saw a glint or a cloud of dust, yet it was seldom and nothing indicated a threat. Nothing indicated that the Emperor of Union, the Many Faced Tyrant himself, was on their trail. On the fourth day they halted for rest, but only Zoe slept. Civilisation became scarce and the presence of Pandemonium could barely be felt. None of the three acknowledged fear as their source of unsettlement but they each knew it to be true. None of the three acknowledged the voice that had begun to whisper in their ear once again, that pried at their motivations and plucked at their memories. Damon leaned into a cheap lawn chair by the fire.

“So, you two, whats your occupation?” He passed his hand over Marius, then Zoe asleep beside him, blissful and content.

“Nothing so noble as being a peacekeeper or vigilante, bounty hunting and private investigations are the long and short of it.” Marius replied with a smile.

“Is that so?”

“Morals over money of course, oh and don't fret, we won’t be charging for our current services.”

“Consider my nerves eased.” Louise said, rolling her eyes.

Damon nodded and leaned his head backward. He looked at the skies, free of city lights or polluted clouds. The cosmic lights drifting amongst the black waves. He remembered the valley and his place among the stars. His mind relaxed for a moment, until the subtle pangs of unease returned. Until his mind remembered that he should be feeling afraid, feeling powerless and unbalanced.

“What about you two?” Asked Marius. “You going to give Damon a head start once you’ve cleared your mind?”

Damon’s focus returned to the conversation and he sank a little into his seat as the words registered. She was staring at him.

“That remains to be seen,” she said, “but I do have a few ideas in mind.” Louise winked at Damon, he sank a little further.

A cold wind enveloped the land. There was a glitter in the planes. The Tyrant trudged onward.

On the fifth day they reached a small settlement untouched by war or bandits, maybe due to its proximity to the rusted city of Ochre and the rumours that surround it, or, more likely, because of the naval outpost a day or so South-West of them.

“You say you are familiar with the place?” Said Damon as he poked his neck into the cabin.
